About us

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mission is to protect human health and the environment. EPA works to ensure that: - Americans have clean air, land and water; - National efforts to reduce environmental risks are based on the best available scientific information; - Federal laws protecting human health and the environment are administered and enforced fairly, effectively and as Congress intended; - Environmental stewardship is integral to U.S. policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry, and international trade, and these factors are similarly considered in establishing environmental policy; - All parts of society--communities, individuals, businesses, and state, local and tribal governments--have access to accurate information sufficient to effectively participate in managing human health and environmental risks; - Contaminated lands and toxic sites are cleaned up by potentially responsible parties and revitalized; and - Chemicals in the marketplace are reviewed for safety. The agency was founded in 1970 and is headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia with ten additional regional headquarters offices (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle) as well as more than a dozen laboratories, and other regional and programmatic offices.

  • Meet Cavin! Scientist and computational biologist Dr. Cavin Ward-Caviness is a vital part of EPA's #PublicHealth research. His research focuses on understanding the human health impact of environmental or neighborhood factors and the biological pathways that link exposures and health. What makes people more sensitive to air pollution, and how can we reduce their risks? Hear Cavin talk about his work: https://lnkd.in/e6De9DEG "Often as a researcher, you sit back and think that maybe in 50 years someone will figure out a way to use this work or maybe in 20 years this will get implemented into clinical medicine. But for me, it’s very easy to see how my research translates into improving public health." His work translates directly into his leadership role in the Environmental Protection Agency Clinical and Archived Records Research for Environmental Studies. EPA CARES is a partnership with University of North Carolina to use electronic health records to study environmental exposures in vulnerable patient populations. Having made great insights into the health effects of air pollution since the start in 2017, Cavin believes "EPA CARES will be an excellent window into environmental health effects for understudied patient populations for years to come." Learn more about EPA CARES: https://lnkd.in/ehwNwp7J As someone who always knew he would be a scientist, he wants up-and-coming future scientists to know that it's easy to fall into a research rut and "you have to learn to love the mundane parts of science!" Some of Cavin's favorite days as an #EPAer are when he gets contacted by students and researchers who want to know more about this important work - "it's always a great reminder that science touches real people in real time."

  • Meet John! For Air Quality Awareness Week, we want you to get to know one of the #EPAers who is equipping us with the resources necessary to share near real-time air quality information through AirNow, so we can breathe cleaner air. Since 2000, John has lived his dream of working for the EPA, witnessing the remarkable evolution of #AirNow. What began as a humble EPA ozone mapping project for the Northeast became a vital national resource. AirNow offers real-time data on ozone and particle pollution, alongside a suite of tools that can empower individuals to safeguard their health against air pollution. Check it out: https://www.airnow.gov/ AirNow is also available for download on Apple and Android devices! 📲 iPhone: https://lnkd.in/gAYmTXB8 📲 Android: https://lnkd.in/gW9xcVm7 "I will always cherish my time in those early days of the program, when we were encouraging many state and local agencies to join the program, as well as convincing local weather casters and national media outlets to carry Air Quality Index information," John said. "Watching the program grow from a dozen states in 2000 to having data from all 50 states, Canada, parts of Mexico, and nearly 75 U.S. embassies and consulates across the world is very rewarding." John emphasizes that the success of today's AirNow program would not be possible without the robust collaboration with over 175 state, local, Tribal, and federal agencies. Together, they contribute crucial air quality data, forecast models, and other essential support to quickly deliver accurate air quality information to the public. A more recent feature John is proud of is EPA's collaboration with USDA Forest Service to create the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map. This popular map marks the first time EPA has used crowd-sourced data from low-cost sensors to report the AQI, bringing information about the fine particles in #WildfireSmoke to more areas than ever. Since its launch in August 2000, the map has been viewed over 48 million times. When John is not managing the AirNow Program, he uses AirNow to explore the outdoors, especially on his motorcycle and aboard cruise ships. Thank you, John, for sharing your work with us! We're on our way to download the AirNow apps to our phones now.
